Preparing for the IELTS Exam
IELTS is an acronym for International English as a
foreign language. We have discussed about IELTS in our previous post.
How
to Prepare for the IELTS?
First, you have to know what is in the test.
The test is prepared for a candidate in the following
areas:
1. Listening
-30 minutes
2. Reading
Test -30 minutes
3. Writing
Test -60 minutes
4. Speaking
Test-14 minutes
The total time is 2 hours 14 minutes.
1.Listening.
The candidate listens to four recordings by a native
English speaker and has to answer the questions. Tip: It is no use listening to
locals who do not speak Native English. Since it is the British who prepare it,
the candidate has to listen to Native British Speakers.
Solution:
Watch some British serials:
For Example:
“Mind your Language”/ Watch all Seasons without
subtitles. You should use headphones.
In this part many candidates score low not because of
English but because they cannot understand the accent and are ‘fast’. So get
used to the accent from before.
2.
Reading
This section has 40 questions. It is like
comprehension. You have to get the main idea and be analytical. Just practice
finishing the questions in 20 minutes.
3.
Writing Test.
Two tasks or
essays are given. The quality is for undergraduate and postgraduate studies.
Task
1-A
chart, bar graph. You have to explain or summarize. Frankly speaking, it tests
your analytical skills. If you cannot do it in your language forget to do it in
English.
There are two parts to task 1:
·
Analytical. –Practice analyzing Bar graphs,
charts, etc.
·
English- You have to know enough to express
yourself. The problem lies students from the Indian subcontinent might not be
able to express themselves in their own language let alone English. They usually
study English for 10 years but is more of memorization.
Another thing is improving the following even before
attempting:
·
Basic English Usage
·
Grammar
·
Comprehension
·
Essay
·
Parts of Speech.
All the above needs to be worked on before coming to
sit for the exam.
Task 2- an opinion of a particular subject. The
candidate has 30 minutes and has to clearly present his views. In the absence
of practice, it becomes difficult.
